If you’re looking to fix a flat tire on your wheelbarrow, chances are that you must have done it before on your own else you might find it a little bit difficult to remove the tire and then fix it back again. Besides, the online store is filled up with different types of wheelbarrows and they are all meant to do specific jobs in the garden.
To make sure that a flat tire does not stop you from completing your garden tasks, here are some tips on everything you need to know about wheelbarrows including how to fix a flat tire on a wheelbarrow.
Types Of Wheelbarrows
Wheelbarrow with a steel tray
There are lots of different steel wheelbarrows in the market and they have been there for many years. These wheelbarrows have a metal container and are sometimes referred to as ‘construction wheelbarrow’ in popular speech. However, a construction wheelbarrow is not only suitable for the construction sector, but also, for example, for road workers.
The construction wheelbarrows with a steel bucket are designed for the construction site’s rough conditions and are therefore extremely suitable for transporting and unloading heavy raw materials. Just think of sand, soil, or even concrete. These wheelbarrows are equipped with headrests and have a container with a round nose. These two properties make unloading bulky goods a piece of cake.
A wheelbarrow with a metal bucket is the number 1 choice on the construction site. This is because a wheelbarrow with a steel bucket can be loaded more heavily, and it runs more smoothly. Moreover, this wheelbarrow is excellent for pouring concrete.
Wheelbarrow with a plastic container
One of the best-known and most sold wheelbarrows that you can purchase anywhere in the country is the plastic wheelbarrow. This type of wheelbarrows is a part of the street scene thanks to its bright yellow container. This wheelbarrow is equipped with a heavy-duty HDPE plastic container. Moreover, this yellow container is mounted on a reinforced and galvanized base, consisting of a heavy, oval tube. Thanks to these properties, the yellow wheelbarrow is exceptionally robust and has a very long service life. This container has a capacity of no less than 100 liters so that you can transport even more sand with it.
A wheelbarrow with a plastic container – is uses favorite among road workers. This wheelbarrow offers a larger volume and is considerably lighter. Also, the hard plastic container is exceptionally resistant to throwing stones. If the container is torn after years of intensive use, you can easily replace this plastic container with a new one. This can be done by loosening only some lock bolts.
Wheelbarrow with an auxiliary engine.
A wheelbarrow is a tool that has been around for several centuries, in almost unchanged form.
You might now think that a wheelbarrow cannot be improved anymore, but there are lots of variant brands in the market that come up with a novelty that makes working with a wheelbarrow much more efficient. And one of such genuity is the electric wheelbarrows.
An electric wheelbarrow makes the work much easier for you. Thanks to a large battery and a powerful electric motor, you never have to push the wheelbarrow yourself again, but it moves. The only thing you still have to do yourself is to lift the wheelbarrow. And of course, you also have to take care of the loading and unloading yourself. The self-propelled wheelbarrow is available with a steel or a plastic bucket and a standard operating radius or an extended operating radius.
The wheelbarrow wheel is one of the essential parts of your wheelbarrow. Because imagine that those few square meters of rubber are the only contact between the heavy load in your wheelbarrow and the ground. Much, if not everything, stands or falls with the choice of your wheelbarrow wheel.
Almost every wheelbarrow is equipped with a standard wheelbarrow wheel. This means that it consists of a rim, inner tube, and an outer tire. But just like with your bicycle, a wheelbarrow tire can become flat. Indeed, in construction, where there are often nails and screws on the ground, this sometimes happens. And always just when it does not suit you.
That is why there are some wheelbarrows on the market that are equipped with a reliable plastic tire. This means that this wheel can never go flat again. However, it is also possible to purchase and install this never-again-leak wheel afterward.
Wheelbarrow for the specialist
These are both the stone wheelbarrow and the tool wheelbarrow. Both wheelbarrows are specially made for one task, which they fulfill with power.
For example, the tool wheelbarrow consists of a steel base with a large container with just under 200 liters. This bin is handy for storing your valuable tools safe and dry. Handy is that the folding lid and the container are equipped with an opening, with which you can close this container with a padlock.
The stone wheelbarrow is a wheelbarrow with a large platform and high, upright bulkhead. This wheelbarrow is – of course – specially made to be able to transport stones. And not just a little bit. The stone wheelbarrow can be loaded with up to 250 kilos and offers no less than sixty stones. Ideal for road workers and masons!
Hand truck as a particular wheelbarrow
There is another wheelbarrow that is rightly not called a wheelbarrow in addition to all wheelbarrows and variants. This is the hand truck, a wheelbarrow to transport your goods upright and equipped with two wheels.
A hand truck is ideal for general cargo that is too heavy to lift. With the hand trucks, you can choose from a wide variety of models and types
Wheelbarrow: Tips for use and maintenance
Although working with a wheelbarrow requires little explanation, there are several things that you should take into account.
- Do not over-inflate the wheelbarrow tire. The advice is to maintain a maximum tire pressure of 2.0 bar.
- Make sure the heaviest load is above the wheel. In this way, the wheelbarrow can be moved a lot more stable and lighter.
- After use, store the wheelbarrow covered and vertically – i.e., standing upright against the wall. This will undoubtedly benefit the wheelbarrow’s life, especially in a wheelbarrow with a steel container. If water gets into this, the container will rust away in no time.
- Do you have to go up and down a sidewalk or threshold with your wheelbarrow? Then put a plank on top of this. This way your wheelbarrow rolls up and down easily
- Do you often have to transport stones and clinkers? Then take a wheelbarrow with a plastic container. This is much more resistant to the loading of paving stones.
- If you want to pour concrete, take a steel wheelbarrow with a round nose, the so-called construction wheelbarrow. Thanks to this round nose, the concrete runs nicely from the center of the wheelbarrow.
How do you fix a flat tire on a wheelbarrow?
It is unnecessary to dwell on the reasons your tire went flat, and these are things that happen, and sometimes too often! But let’s get into action; hopefully, we’ll fix the thorny punctured wheel problem once and for all.
When you puncture your wheelbarrow, you have several options for fixing it. The most comfortable: you go to your garage with the wheel to repair it, but you will pay a high price.
The second requires moderate effort: you go to a garden center to find a new identical one, even a complete wheel.
Finally, the most engaging and gratifying for the ego is buying a puncture repair kit and repairing it yourself. It’s nicer, probably faster, and most of all, less expensive than the other solutions.
Even if you haven’t been punctured yet, keep in mind that puncture protection kits are also applied as a preventative measure; they are often more effective in this case. In general, they fit all circumstances, but check that they are suitable for your valve.
This kit is identical to the valves that are found in cars, equipment, and most trucks. Then they are thinner and equipped with an element to unscrew to inflate them, like bicycle wheels. In the latter case, this means that your wheel is fitted with an inner tube. Therefore, you will need a specific kit under pressure and you will find these kits in DIY stores, as well as some gas stations or garden centers.
Difficulty: moderate cost: less than 10 dollars
Required tools: –
- an anti-puncture kit
- a flat wrench for the wheel nut
- a piece of chalk or a marker
- a pump to re-inflate the wheel
Step 1: check these points before you begin.
Check the valve type, as explained above, before purchasing the puncture repair kit.
The word “tubeless,” i.e., tubeless, must appear on the sidewall of the tire.
Step 2: Remove the wheel
Using the open-end wrench, loosen the nut to remove the wheel. You may need another opposite key to prevent the shaft from rotating.
Step 3: inspect the tire.
All foreign objects that may be stuck in the tire must be removed. Needle nose pliers or tweezers can be helpful.
Step 4: detect leaks.
Put water in the tank and inflate the wheel. Immerse it in it and visually locate all the places where small bubbles escape (there may be several). For more precision, remove the wheel from the water and pass the dishwashing liquid to its location. Where the bubbles swell, there is a hole.
Use chalk to indicate the location of the hole by marking the sidewall of the tire.
Step 5: remove the valve housing.
All kits have a tool for removing the valve housing.
If you have not done so already, then flatten the wheel, and insert the tool to unscrew normally, in a counterclockwise rotation.
Gently remove the shell and place it in a safe place.
Step 6: Insert the kit.
With the valve core removed, turn the wheel, so the valve is in the 4 or 8 o’clock position. This is important to prevent the repair fluid from spilling unnecessarily in the middle of it is at the noon position, or too dense a heap hampers its insertion if it is at the 6 o’clock position.
Press the bottle to allow the clogging fluid to penetrate. The recommended amount is specified on the label: in our case, half the bottle is recommended. Slowly turn the wheel and stay in the places marked with chalk, turning the marks down so that the liquid clogs the openings.
Step 7: reassemble the elements.
The puncture protection kit is inserted into the tire. Reassemble the valve with the tool and inflate to the pressure indicated on the tire.
In the unlikely event that your wheel is not original, you should also observe the inflation pressure that the tire accepts, is written on it, and inflate to the lesser of the two maximum pressure values indicated.
Reassemble the wheel and tighten the nut. Leave the chalk marks at the 6 o’clock position in case the liquid is not entirely frozen inside. That’s it.
Not only is the hole blocked, but it is also now protected from other punctures that may occur. It is so simple that one could almost wonder why the wheels are not treated directly at the factory against pricks.
In conclusion, not every wheelbarrow works the same way and each one has its specific purpose to make your garden work easier. If you have a punctured tire while working on your yard, you actually don’t need to stop work as you can have the tire fixed within a few minutes.
And if you think you cannot afford to fix the flat tire yourself, you can have it send to an expert to have it fixed for you, the only problem, of course, is that it will cost you more to fix and this is the aspect you really want to avoid as you need to keep the cost of running your garden at the bearest minimum.
